About the work.

Dùthchas is a Gàidhlig word for the inherited belonging to a place, a tie that comes through ancestry and dwelling rather than ownership. This painting is the centre of that idea within the show, made in calligraphy ink on canvas board at the largest scale I have worked at to date.

It is the most recently completed piece in Understory, made over roughly two months, and it draws together the marks and methods explored across the other works in the exhibition. Within the exhibition, the four paintings are arranged in a spiral, and Dùthchas hangs as the anchor point that arrangement turns around. Find out more about Understory collection.
