Frequently asked questions.
What inspires your artwork?
My paintings are inspired by landscapes that carry emotional weight - places tied to memory, belonging, and cultural stories. I’m particularly drawn to the dramatic skies, forests, and coastlines of Scotland, and to the idea that nature holds echoes of the past and our personal histories.
What techniques do you use?
I work primarily with ink on paper and canvas, often in monochrome. My process combines fine line work, washes, and layering to create depth, texture, and movement in each piece. I experiment with traditional brush painting techniques as well as my own methods to capture the contrasts and fluidity of nature.
Why do you paint in monochrome?
Working in black ink allows me to focus on light, shadow, and texture, evoking the mood and memory of a place rather than a literal representation. The simplicity of monochrome helps me communicate feelings of isolation, connection, and timelessness.
What does “cianalas” mean in your work?
Cianalas is a Gaelic word that roughly translates to a sense of homesickness or longing for a place. It reflects the emotional undertone of much of my work - a deep connection to the land and a sense of yearning for belonging, even in familiar places.
Are your paintings based on real places?
Yes - every painting is rooted in a real place I’ve visited and connected with. I spend time in each landscape, observing its details and atmosphere, and often working from my own photographs and sketches as reference.
Do you use traditional or modern techniques?
My practice blends both - I research traditional ink and brush painting methods, particularly from East Asian and Scottish artistic traditions, while also developing contemporary approaches that suit my themes and vision.
How long does each painting take?
Each piece is different - some smaller works come together over a few days, while larger, more layered paintings can take weeks or even months as I build up washes and refine the details.
