Frequently asked questions.
What inspires your artwork?
My paintings are inspired by landscapes that carry emotional weight—places tied to memory, belonging, and cultural narrative. I’m particularly drawn to the forests, coastlines, and shifting skies of Scotland, and to the idea that environments hold traces of personal and collective history.
Are your paintings based on real places?
Yes. Every work begins with a place I have physically visited. I spend time walking, observing, and photographing before translating the experience into ink. The final piece is not a direct depiction but an atmospheric response shaped by memory and material process.
Why do you work in ink and monochrome?
Black ink allows me to focus on tone, shadow, and spatial depth without the distraction of colour. Monochrome creates a sense of timelessness and ambiguity, enabling the work to sit between the observed and the remembered.
What techniques do you use?
I combine fine line drawing with layered washes, allowing controlled mark-making to interact with the fluid autonomy of ink. Through repetition, dilution, and subtraction, surfaces develop gradually, often over extended periods.
How does research inform your practice?
My work is shaped by ongoing research into embodied perception, chronic pain, and sensory experience, as well as place attachment, collective memory, and the Gaelic concept of cianalas. These ideas influence how I approach scale, tempo, and spatial density rather than appearing as literal subject matter.
What does “cianalas” mean in your work?
Cianalas describes a form of longing rooted in landscape and lineage. It reflects the emotional undercurrent of my practice—a sense of connection to place that is both intimate and distant.
Do you work on a large scale as well as small works?
Yes. Alongside smaller pieces, I am developing larger ink works that allow for a more immersive spatial encounter. Scale introduces a physical relationship between body and surface, which is an important part of my current practice.
Are your works original?
All original works are one of a kind. I also produce limited edition prints of selected paintings; these are clearly marked with edition details.
Do your original works come with a certificate of authenticity?
Yes. All original works and limited edition prints are supplied with a signed certificate of authenticity.
Are your works framed?
Framing details are listed on each artwork page. Works on paper are typically sold unframed unless otherwise stated, allowing collectors to frame according to their space.
Do you accept commissions?
I accept a small number of commissions each year. These are based on landscapes of shared significance and developed through discussion and reference material.
How do I enquire about purchasing a work?
Please use the contact page to request a price list, availability, or further images. I am happy to provide additional details for collectors and galleries.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes. Works are carefully packaged and shipped worldwide. Shipping costs and delivery times are provided upon enquiry.
Can I view available works in person?
Studio visits may be arranged by appointment in Edinburgh. Please get in touch to discuss.
How long does each painting take?
Smaller works may take several days, while larger layered pieces can take weeks or months as washes are built and allowed to settle over time.
