A quiet, contemplative ink painting capturing a thickly wooded scene in the heart of the Pentland Hills. The piece is based on a photograph taken during a family walk to Poet’s Glen - a secluded place where a broken plank path stretches across a patch of boggy ground, perhaps once an old burn, now softened by time.

Using black calligraphy ink on canvas board, the painting builds up slowly through delicate linework, tonal washes, and textural layering. The composition is rich in surface and depth, with each layer adding to the quiet density of the scene - the trees, the path, the ground itself, all bearing the marks of presence and passing.

Though small in scale, Poet’s Glen is immersive. It holds a kind of hush - the stillness of moss underfoot, the rhythm of trees leaning in, and the forgotten path that suggests both departure and return.

Artist Note:

This piece took shape slowly, over around 30 hours, through the careful layering of ink - an accumulation of textures, like the glen itself. The foreground path, cracked and slipping into the land, felt symbolic as I worked: a remnant of human presence overtaken by time and moss. It’s a place that asks you to slow down, to pay attention.

Unlike some of my more expansive landscape works, Poet’s Glen is intimate - both in size and spirit. I didn’t try to open the space up; instead, I leaned into its closeness. The trees feel almost like a gathering, and the path - broken, but still stretching forward - became a quiet focal point.

It’s a painting about layered memory: how land remembers us, and how we remember it in return.
