Duibhe

£1,500.00

A striking original ink painting inspired by the mountainous landscapes of the Scottish Highlands. Duibhe - from the Gaelic word for "darkness" or "blackness" - captures the elemental contrast between brooding skies and textured earth. Painted over the course of several weeks using black calligraphy ink, this piece blends fine detail with expressive, gestural mark-making to evoke both the quiet density and dramatic energy of Highland terrain.

The foreground is rendered with intricate textures, layered over time with precision and care. In contrast, the sky spills outward in fluid washes and sweeping brushwork - a visual tension that reflects the duality often found in wild landscapes: grounded and storm-touched, still and in motion.

Every brushstroke was laid with intention, using ink's unpredictability to explore atmosphere, emotion, and memory. Duibhe is a one-of-a-kind original that holds space for solitude, connection, and the raw presence of place.

Artist Note:

Duibhe emerged slowly, over many months - not just in brushstrokes but in mindset. It began as an experiment in scale: larger than I was used to, more expressive than I was comfortable with. For a long time, it felt like it wasn’t working. I lost count of the moments I nearly abandoned it altogether.

But in time, I stopped trying to control it. The piece became a conversation between light and dark, between restraint and surrender. The name Duibhe - meaning "blackness" or "darkness" in Gaelic - felt fitting not just for the ink or the landscape, but for the headspace I had to pass through to finish it. The Highlands are full of these layered, shadowed places. So are we.

The intricate textures in the land came slowly, one fine brushstroke at a time. The sky came in waves - sometimes forceful, sometimes still. In the end, this painting became something I never expected: not a failure, but a lesson in letting go.
