An original ink painting capturing the quiet weight of Arthur’s Seat - Edinburgh’s ancient volcano and one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. This view is not the postcard image but something more intimate: textured grasses in the foreground, the muted rise of the hill beyond, rendered in layered washes of black calligraphy ink.

Drawn from personal experience, this piece is a reflection on the ways in which wildness and stillness can exist even within the boundaries of a city. The hill looms and recedes, depending on light and mood - here, it is rendered in quiet contrast, its form emerging through marks that are both deliberate and open.

Artist Note:

Arthur’s Seat has always felt to me like a quiet presence at the heart of the city - both watchful and indifferent, wild yet familiar. I’ve walked its slopes in fog and in sun, sometimes feeling completely alone, sometimes among crowds. What struck me from this view is how it seems to erupt from the city skyline, anchoring it. Long before Edinburgh grew to hug the base of its slopes, this ancient volcano stood witness to centuries of change - and still it watches, steady and unmoved. No matter what is happening on the streets below, you can always look to Arthur’s Seat - a guiding presence through time.

I wanted to honour that feeling of stillness and quiet weight in this piece. The layered washes of ink, the subtle textures in the foreground, and the restrained contrast all aim to capture the way wildness can live even within the lines of a city - a reminder that some places allow us to simply stand and breathe.
